Art That Amazes

Elsa Schiaparelli created fashion with great courage, changing the very way of being…

Born in Rome in 1890, Elsa arrived in Paris with a boundless imagination. In 1927, she began to build her own creative universe, challenging the notion that fashion had to be merely elegant and beautiful.

For her, a garment had to possess a soul. It had to evoke emotions, provoke, and surprise. Above all, it had to have the courage to be different.

Fascinated by Surrealism, she collaborated with artists such as Salvador Dalí, transforming clothes into wearable dreams. The Lobster Dress, the Skeleton Dress, and the Tear Dress were not merely Haute Couture creations; they were stories, fantasies, and works of art brought to life on a woman’s body.

And then came “Shocking Pink”—an intense, bold shade of pink that was impossible to ignore. Much like Elsa herself.

In 1935, at 21 Place Vendôme in Paris, she founded a Maison that never asked for permission to be extraordinary. Schiaparelli had no desire to please everyone; she wanted to leave her mark.

Following the closure of her Haute Couture Maison in 1954, it seemed as though an era had come to an end. But authentic ideas never truly disappear; they simply wait for the right moment to be reborn.

In 2019, Daniel Roseberry took on the role of artistic director, initiating a new dialogue with Elsa’s legacy. Gold was transformed into sculpture, anatomical forms into jewelry, and surrealist fantasy took on a fresh, contemporary power.

Roseberry did not attempt to become Elsa; instead, he dared to reinterpret her.

And perhaps this is precisely where the secret of Schiaparelli lies: in preserving the soul of the past while remaining fearless in imagining the future. Because some women do not merely create fashion. They create a world in which others learn to dream.

Elsa Schiaparelli was one of them. And today, through every new creation, her courage lives on.

Fashion need not always be predictable. At times, it should disrupt, captivate—compelling you to pause and take a second look.

For when fashion becomes art, being different is the most beautiful form of courage.
